Français / English / Deutsch / Italiano / Español / русский La Clef is an emblematic movie theater located in the “quartier latin” of Paris, originally known for supporting under-represented genre and rare art films. After La Clef’s owner, who was planning to sell the building, closed the venue in 2018, the non-profit organization, Home Cinema, decided to occupy the place in order to protect it from real estate speculation. After one year of occupation, 300 screenings, more than 100 guests, constant support from moviegoers, filmmakers and technicians, media, institutions and politicians, there is so far no long-term sustainable solution…

An innovative, sustainable and disinterested acquisition The money from this campaign will be passed back to the endowment fund “Cinéma Revival: for an Associative Cinema”, which will become the owner of the walls. In 1981, Caisse d’Epargne’s worker’s committee bought the theater, keeping two screening rooms running and turning the rest of the building into a cultural center for its employees. In the 90’s, two associations ran the remaining movie rooms and shaped the identity of la Clef with their eclectic programming.
