La Clef is an emblematic community-run cinema in Paris.

When it was at risk of disappearing, in 2019, a collective of volunteers organized to try and save it: they occupied the building and turned the projectors back on. This grassroots initiative garnered support from audiences of thousands and the film industry at large – including renowned artists such as Martin Scorsese, David Lynch and Jean-Luc Godard –, demonstrating the importance of such communal cultural spaces.

We eventually collected enough donations to buy the theater in June 2024, ensuring that La Clef remains a community-run cinema, with bold participatory programming and a pay-what-you-can ticket pricing.

The collective continues its fundraising effort in order to renovate the building. The reopening took place on January 14th, 2026!
